How to Calculate GST (18%, 12%, 5%)? Exact Formula Guide

Written by: GSTBillFree Billing Experts

Simplifying Math for Business Owners. Getting your GST calculation wrong by even a single rupee can cause ITC mismatch errors for your clients. We provide the exact mathematical formulas to calculate exclusive and inclusive GST.

Whether you are setting the price for a new product, or you are generating a bill for a freelance client, calculating the exact amount of Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a daily necessity.

There are two distinct scenarios when calculating GST:

  1. Exclusive GST: You have a base price, and you need to add GST on top of it.
  2. Inclusive GST: You have a final MRP (Total Price), and you need to find out how much GST is hidden inside it.

In this guide, we provide the exact mathematical formulas to help you solve both scenarios instantly.

Let Our Free Tool Calculate GST Automatically

Formula 1: Adding GST to a Base Price (Exclusive)

If you sell a service for ₹10,000 and want to charge 18% GST on top of it, use this formula to find the GST amount:

GST Amount = (Base Price x GST % Rate) / 100

Total Price = Base Price + GST Amount

Example Calculation (18% Slab):

If you are billing a local client, this ₹ 1,800 is split into ₹ 900 CGST and ₹ 900 SGST.

Formula 2: Extracting GST from a Total Price (Inclusive)

This is where most people get confused. Suppose you sell a product at a final MRP of ₹11,800 (which already includes 18% GST). How do you find the original base price without tax?

Do NOT simply calculate 18% of 11,800. That is mathematically incorrect! You must use the reverse calculation formula:

Base Price = Total Price / [ 1 + (GST % Rate / 100) ]

GST Amount = Total Price - Base Price

Example Reverse Calculation (18% Slab):

Why Manual Calculations Are Risky

While the formulas above are straightforward for round numbers, calculating GST manually on weird amounts (like ₹ 14,327.50 with a 12% GST rate) often leads to decimal rounding errors.

In India's GST system, if your invoice total does not match the exact calculation expected by the GSTN portal (even by ₹0.50), your client's Input Tax Credit can face reconciliation issues in GSTR-2B.

To completely avoid mathematical errors and save time, smart businesses stop using manual calculators and Excel formulas. You can use an automated GST billing software.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

How do I calculate 18% GST on a base amount?
Simply multiply the base amount by 18 and divide by 100. E.g., for Rs. 10,000, the GST is (10,000 * 18)/100 = Rs. 1,800. The total becomes Rs. 11,800.
How do I extract GST from a total inclusive amount?
To find the GST included in a total price, use the formula: Base Price = Total Price / [1 + (GST Rate/100)]. Subtract the Base Price from the Total Price to get the GST amount.
Does GST calculation differ for CGST and SGST?
The total GST amount remains the same. If the supply is intra-state, you simply divide the total calculated GST by 2 (half for CGST and half for SGST).
